Dora-Care Behavioral Foundation
Empowering communities with accessible mental health support

NGO – AFRICA
Dora-Care Behavioral Foundation is a non-profit organization transforming access to mental health care across Africa through early intervention, community based support and professional psychosocial services. We equip individuals, strengthen communities and connect people to the care they need, building systems that make mental health support accessible, practical and sustainable.
Our Core Activity
At Dora-Care Behavioral Foundation, our core activity focuses on empowering communities with the skills and systems needed to improve mental well-being through a holistic integration of mental, social, and emotional care. We equip children, educators, caregivers, and community members with practical Mental Health First Aid skills, psychosocial support tools, and early intervention strategies to identify, respond to, and prevent mental health challenges.
Through structured training, community-based programs, and digital innovation, we develop a network of trained Mental Health First Aiders and Community Caregivers who provide immediate, accessible support within their environments, particularly in underserved communities where access to professional care is limited. Our approach is designed to normalize mental health support, strengthen early-response systems, and build resilient communities better equipped to care for one another.
Dora-Care is not just delivering programs; we are building sustainable, community-driven mental health systems across Africa.

Why We Use Mental Health First Aid as a Tool for Change
Expandng Access to Early Mental Health Support for All
Imagine a society where people are equipped to recognize the early signs of mental distress, respond with confidence, and connect individuals to the right support at the right time. At Dora-Care, we believe that mental health care should begin long before a crisis occurs. While specialized services remain essential, many mental health challenges can be identified early and managed through timely, informed support within everyday environments.
Mental Health First Aid provides individuals with practical skills to offer initial support, de-escalate crises, and guide those in need toward appropriate care. By equipping teachers, caregivers, community leaders, and young people with these skills, we are strengthening the first line of response within communities. This approach bridges the critical gap between awareness and access to care. It ensures that support is not delayed, stigma is reduced, and individuals are not left without help when it matters most.
When necessary, individuals are seamlessly referred to trained professionals, creating a structured pathway from early support to specialized care. Through Mental Health First Aid, we are building informed, responsive communities where mental health support is accessible, timely, and effective.

OUR APPROACH
Dora-Care 5S
The Dora-Care 5S Framework bridges community-based care with innovation to create resilient, scalable mental health systems for underserved populations.
STEP 1
SCREEN
We conduct structured mental health awareness and screening initiatives to enable early identification of emotional distress, behavioral challenges, and psychosocial risks among children, adolescents, and community members. Using culturally relevant tools and guided assessments, we help educators and caregivers recognize warning signs early and take timely action before conditions escalate.
STEP 2
SKILL
We provide comprehensive training in Mental Health First Aid, psychosocial support, and emotional intelligence, equipping teachers, parents, and community members with practical skills for effective response. Our training emphasizes active listening, empathy, psychological safety, and early intervention techniques, aligned with global best practices and adapted for local contexts.
STEP 3
SUPPORT
We establish safe, structured support systems within schools and communities where individuals can access immediate help. This includes peer support systems, guided conversations, and access to trained mental health first aiders, ensuring that no individual is left without care when needed.
STEP 4
STRENGTHEN
We strengthen families and community ecosystems by building supportive networks that promote long-term mental well-being. Through caregiver engagement, community dialogues, and partnerships with institutions, we create environments that reinforce resilience, reduce stigma, and encourage help-seeking behaviors.
STEP 5
SUSTAIN
We ensure continuity of care and long-term impact through follow-up systems, digital innovation, and integration into existing structures. Leveraging the CareEquity platform, ongoing mentorship, and data-driven insights, we build sustainable mental health systems that can scale across low-resource settings.
